A short distance from the pristine beaches of Siesta Key and unassumingly tucked away in a shopping center is Shakespeare’s English Pub (3550 S Osprey Ave). Locals adore its cozy atmosphere, televised sports games, and the pub-style fare. Whereas Shakespeare, the author, is known for his dramatic stories, this pub’s story is written in Black Angus beef.

In 2008, Shakespeare’s won Creative Loafing’s Best Burger contest. Since then, they’ve continued to garner media attention. They’ve been cited in SarasotaToday.com and Sarasota Herald-Tribune, among numerous other media outlets. Ultimately, every restaurant must genuflect to public opinion, so don’t take our word for it—try some of the recommendations listed below.

Specialty burgers and British staples

Thirteen specialty burgers are currently featured on the menu. Of these, there are two must-tries for new and seasoned customers. First is the caramelized onion and brie burger made with sweet balsamic caramelized onions and a thick slab of brie cheese. Second is the classic British burger made with bacon, stilton blue cheese (a cheese known for its rich and mellow flavor and pungent aftertaste), and sautéed mushrooms and onion.

In addition, Shakespeare’s serves plenty of savory British appetizers. We highly recommend the Spicy English Beer Cheese Dip made with cheddar cheese, English ale, spices, and green onions, served with house-made chips. Or on the chef’s recommendation, give the English Dustbin Lids a go. This uniquely named appetizer consists of crispy potato skins filled with English sausage, onions, mushrooms, and cheddar cheese.
