New roundabout opens for public use, enhancing safety on Ringling Boulevard

The roundabout at Ringling Boulevard and Pine Place is now open for public use by vehicles, bicyclists, and pedestrians. The roundabout replaced a traditional signalized intersection and represents the City of Sarasota’s continued effort to decrease traffic accidents and fatalities.

The public may experience minor delays while crews finish striping the roundabout and installing signage, but it is open for use. This roundabout is part of a string that have been installed down Ringling Boulevard, which includes roundabouts at Palm Avenue, Pineapple Avenue, Orange Avenue, and Pine Place.

Sarasota enhances roads for public safety and accessibility

According to the Federal Highway Administration, roundabouts reduce vehicle crash fatalities by 90% and injuries by 76%. Traffic flow is drastically improved as is cyclist and pedestrian safety.

Construction on the roundabout began in May 2024, and features the following enhancements: irrigation, drainage and utility adjustments, new and replacement light poles within project limits. paver brick crosswalks at the four legs of the roundabout, truck apron, and island approaches, in-road warning lights controlled by automatic activation bollards at the crosswalks.

In addition, there’s a new Breeze Transit bus stop, increasing accessibility, and a transit shelter, as well as new striping and markings to match the bicycle and pedestrian enhancements to the Ringling Trail.
