Hap’s Cycles (2530 17th St.) is marking its 76th anniversary this Saturday, November 16, with food, drinks, in-store discounts, and a unique twist—”slow races.” In this unusual race, the last to finish wins, but there’s a catch: motorcycle riders can’t put their feet on the ground, meaning they must skillfully balance and control the clutch to keep moving without falling or stalling.
Alongside the slow races, vendors will bring added excitement to the celebration. Representatives from Alpine Stars and Parts Unlimited will showcase products, while local vintage paint and repair specialists will display their craft. A map maker will also be on-site, sharing the best-hidden roads for riding in Florida. As for deals, Hap’s is offering promotions, including buy one get one on select items, 50% off engine oil, 15% off in-stock riding gear, and up to 50% off closeout riding gear. Discounted sales will end at 4 p.m.
A Sarasota legacy since 1948
Hap’s Cycles has been family-owned and operated since its founding by Happy “Hap” Pomelite, a St. Pete native and World War II veteran. After returning home from the war, Hap, an avid motorcycle enthusiast, took over a small repair shop and built it into a full-fledged dealership. Starting with Harley-Davidson motorcycles, Hap expanded his lineup in response to evolving demands, introducing Honda in 1961 and BMW in 1968. Today, Hap’s is the largest Honda motorcycle dealer in the Southeast and one of the largest BMW dealers.
Family-owned and operated
The legacy of Hap’s continues under the management of his grandson, Steve Bixler, and the sense of family extends to staff and customers alike. “What’s unique about our store,” Bixler shares, “is that many team members aren’t blood-related but have been with us for decades—and everyone is treated like family….it’s different than the typical corporate mindset.” Some employees have been wrenching away at Hap’s for over 40 years, while others are second-generation team members.
This multi-generational loyalty to Hap’s Cycles reflects a deep-rooted passion for motorcycles and customer care, with countless reviews highlighting the warm, familial service that keeps riders returning to Hap’s year after year.
